As poikilotherms, reptiles are extremely dependent on having access to a sun-like source of heat where they can warm their bodies as needed to regulate their metabolism. The purpose of a basking lamp is to simulate the heat produced by the sun, and thus support reptiles' thermoregulatory needs. Both diurnal and nocturnal reptiles should have access to a heat lamp and basking temperatures appropriate to their species.
Heat bulbs can't be mounted in just any lamp fixture, however. To reduce the risk of fire, and maximize bulb longevity and output, it's best to mount your bulb in a ceramic-socket dome fixture like the Exo Terra Light Dome. This fixture features a mirror-polish reflector to increase light output by up to 100%.
To increase the size of your reptile's basking area, use multiple heat lamps.

Exactly What I Needed
Finding a light dome fixture that isn't 8.5" or 5.5" is weirdly difficult, and I needed something in-between! Not too big, not too small. I have my !R Deep Heat projector in this fixture and it works an absolute DREAM. It radiates the heat just perfectly, is compatible with my dimming thermostat controller, and fits exactly into my convoluted lighting/heating setup. If my giant Arcadia lamp ever poops out I'm going to replace it with another of these, or the Glow Light one.

Worked!
Seems to be working fine. With the 50watt dhp. To raise overall night temps. This time of year.
