An appropriate substrate is an important part of any reptile, amphibian, or invertebrate enclosure. The right substrate enhances the function of a naturalistic terrarium, regulating the humidity, cushioning the animal's body, and providing a digging/burrowing medium.

Exo Terra Forest Bark is a substrate made from chips of Douglas Fir bark for tropical reptile species. By absorbing and slowly releasing moisture, this substrate helps maintain comfortable conditions, and the size and shape of the particles discourage crickets from hiding in the substrate.

Although pine and cedar products are generally considered unsafe in the exotic pet hobby, fir has a much lower volatile oil content, especially after being kiln-dried. This makes it safe for use as a reptile substrate.

Instructions for Use:

Spread at least 2” of the bark on the terrarium floor. Water or mist the substrate according to the humidity level required.

Use an Exo Terra Hygrometer to monitor humidity levels. Spot clean the bedding on a daily basis, rinse the substrate in hot water for intermediate cleaning, and completely replace it with new bedding every 8 weeks or when necessary.

This substrate is most compatible with forest-dwelling species, such as:
